The holidays are upon us and trying to enjoy to them to the fullest while caring for infant twins might seem impossible. Here are some simple tips to help you enjoy this special time of year with your friends and family.

Post the rules

If your twinnies were born on the earlier side you might have already instituted some “house rules” such as “wash your hands when you come in”, “change your shirt” (have a bunch of old clean t-shirts for them to change into) for family members that might be smokers, “no shoes in the house” or whatever you are most comfortable with. The holidays bring a lot of extra people into your house and if you have rules, they should be following them too.

Choose wisely

You might get a lot of invitations to different holiday parties. Some with family, some with friends, some with coworkers. Choose wisely the ones that you want to go to so you don’t burn yourself out. Make this plan with your spouse so you could both choose the ones that are most important for you to go to.

Safety first

Don’t let your guard down even for one minute this holiday season. Especially if you are traveling for a few overnight visits, check the equipment that you’ll be using now to ensure that everything is safe and ready to use. A great option for making sure your little ones have a safe place to sleep while visiting Grandma’s house is the BabyBjorn travel crib.

Parent’s first!

There are so many different items that you may get for the holiday that say “babies’ first Christmas”. Always remember that these are your first too. You might have “parents first night away from babies” or “parents first time seeing their friends after the babies were born”. Remember that these times are special for your kids, but for you as well.

Think about what you pack away.

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is that each year when I unload my holiday ornaments I take the hats that my kids wore in the hospital out, along with their bracelets. Since my kids were born at Christmas, I have always stored those items with my holiday stuff. Initially, it wasn’t unintended, I just didn’t know what else to do with them. Now 12 years later when I go to unload my Christmas stuff and I find those little mementos that bring back such cherished memories.

glasses of wine

Say cheers!

Sometimes you just need to feel “normal”. Having a glass of champagne or one beer isn’t going to affect you even if you’re breast-feeding. We aren’t saying that you should be rip-roaring drunk, but moderation is the key here. Studies show minor consumption of alcohol has no effect on breastmilk.

Enjoy the extra hands

With grandma, grandpa and aunt Sue around, take advantage of all these extra hands. Have them do the dirty work like diaper changes and whatever you don’t typically like doing. Even though these items may be monotonous chores to you, to family members who don’t get to see them all the time they’re a special treat. You may even want to take advantage of having all this family around and go on a quick little jaunt with your spouse. Grab a cup of coffee, a candlelit dinner, or even just a nice brisk walk in the park.

Back it Up!

There’s a months of photos that I lost during one year because I forgot to back my photos up. Consider using something like Amazon prime photo or Snapfish or even Google photos to back up all of your unbelievable holiday shots.
