5 Tips to Avoid Sunburn

In the fun of the sun, it’s really easy to forget how important it is to protect our skin! Now add two or more kids, a spouse, and most likely additional friends and family into the mix, and your busy day in the sun just turned into a sunburn waiting to happen. Read these 5 tips to help avoid nasty sunburn from hurting your family and causing possible future skin problems.

1. Rash guards are key to keep kids protected from the sun.

Did you know that UV rays can bounce off sand, concrete, and water? That’s a lot of opportunity for the sun’s rays to burn your little ones! Stock up on a variety of long sleeve and short sleeve rash guards with UPF 50 to make sure you’re “covered”.

2. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure.

That means 30 minutes before leaving the house, or if you’re going to jump into the car to the beach or pool, apply sunscreen right before you get in the car. If you’re putting it on right before you dive in, the ingredients haven’t fully binded to the skin and you may get sunburn more easily.

3. Reapply, reapply, reapply.

I know, it’s exhausting, especially when you have wiggly little ones who do not like sunscreen or who just want to get back in the water. But you really need to be paying attention to the time (or setting a reminder on your phone) to make sure your family is protected. Reapply at least every 2 hours, or more frequently if you’re in the water. Read the directions on your sunscreen carefully to make sure you’re reapplying enough to avoid sunburn. This goes for parents, too! Don’t neglect your own skin.

4. Wear sunscreen even if it’s a cloudy day.

Up to 40 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation reaches the earth on a completely cloudy day. This makes you even more at risk for sunburn; most of us wrongly assume that the sun’s rays aren’t reaching us and able to cause damage. Carry a small bottle of sunscreen in your bag at all times to make sure you’re covered in case the clouds are deceptive.

5. Bring the shade with you.

Remember that even though YOU may be a sun-lover, your family members may not be, and everyone should have the chance to escape the sun if they are not enjoying it. Buy an extra large beach tent or Sportbrella to make sure everyone has a shady retreat when you’re at the beach or pool. Always have light cover-ups, hats, and sunglasses available for all family members who need some extra sun protection.

And just a reminder, in case you didn’t know — babies under the age of six months should not be exposed to the sun, since their skin is highly sensitive to the chemical ingredients in sunscreen as well as to the sun’s rays. Shade and protective clothing are the best ways to protect infants from the sun.
