Reading is an important part of your children’s development. Knowing how to read a book is a key part of life, and you as parents have the tools to teach your kiddies how to do so. The best way to get your child started is to introduce them to books at an early age.

From Birth to 6 Months

From birth to 6 months, your baby should have books with big pictures and bright colors that grab their attention. Having a book that can interest them is the key. Soft covered books that are baby friendly are great, and most can go in the crib with your children. You can prop them up and they can look at the pictures while they fall asleep.

6 Months to a Year Old

For babies 6 months to a year old, they should start to have hard cover books, or boardbooks, that have a bunch of pictures of familiar objects that they can recognize. Books they can touch and hear are a plus, that way they can become comfortable with them. Washable books that they can take in bath time are great, especially so they can hug and sleep with. Picture books of family members and other children are perfect for your children. They can always be reminded of people that they know.

From 12-24 Months Old

For toddlers from 12-24 months old, they should begin to have books that they can carry around with them. Books with only a few words on the page, or one or two sentences are suggested because the kids can use their imagination about what is going on in the story.

24-36 Months

24-36 month year olds should have books that tell easy to understand stories. Reading a book that is too complex could become confusing to the child, and can lose their attention. Pop-up books, or books with the hidden flaps are great because the toddler can interact with the book and it is great for them to feel apart of the process. Also, rhyming books that are catchy or can be easily remembered are good to have. Begin introducing the alphabet, shapes, numbers and other educational stories. Many kids favor books about animals, school, playtime, cars, or other interests of theirs. It is important to find a book that they will enjoy to look at and read.

Preschoolers-Kindergarteners

Preschoolers-Kindergarteners should be learning about the alphabet and words that can be associated with familiar pictures. Books with letters, numbers, shapes, sizes and animals are recommended for them to read. Stories that are funny, exciting, or even something they pick out in the store can be great because they will be enthusiastic about it. It is important to have a bedtime routine of reading together. Doing this activity together is a great bonding experience.

Grammar School

Once your children start grammar school, they should continue reading and develop this skill. Their teachers will often tell you their reading level, but also the library or bookstores can also help. Remember that reading can be fun and with the right book, your children could be reading in no time.
