5 Tips to Calm Infant Twins

Trying to calm infant twins is like trying to wrangle kittens: it takes patience, effort, and can be exhausting. When my twin girls arrived home, they knew how to keep me on my toes. As soon as I was dozing off, one twin would wake me up in a crying panic. I always wondered how such a tiny little body could carry so much energy, and how that energy grows larger the more upset they become. Not to mention how remarkably in sync they are to go off together. During the first months, and through trial and error, I learned many ways to calm my girls down. Here are my top 5.

1. Swing away with relaxing baby sounds

It was a guessing game figuring out how to control outbursts. It dawned on me that each twin wanted something different, and the most remarkable thing happened when I figured out what that was: silence. They loved to be rocked, but fresh from delivery I was still not at my best to rock them. That’s when the baby swing came in handy, built with its own nature soothing sounds, and that ROCKED our world! Twin A would calm down and fall asleep in an instant in her swing with a light vibration and chirping bird sounds. Twin B on the other hand, liked stronger vibrations with the sound of windchimes or flowy rivers. Out in public, I would play these sounds on my phone, which would not only help with public outbursts, but also bring peace and quiet throughout the car ride home. Nothing like mother nature sounds working at its best!

2. Baby massages and gripe water

These little twin divas knew the good things in life since they were born: MASSAGES. I stroked my fingers gently across their backs, and on their foreheads and voila! They suddenly calmed down and would just give me a sleepily stare of relaxation. At bedtime, it also comes in handy to sooth one of your twins without waking the other one up, and saves your back from the extra rocking in the late hours. It’s so effective, especially after feeding them. In other instances, baby massages are also great for passing gas and colic. Check with your pediatrician on how to appropriately massage your baby’s belly to help with passing gas/colic. Once we learned the appropriate massages we combined it with gripe water and that helped ease their pain, keeping them calm throughout the day and night. These worked hand in hand and made my life so much easier! Happy Twins=Happy Mom=Happy Life

3. Warm baths

When the twins would get cranky right after their feeding, indicated by a loud cry, a warm bath would relax them off the bat. I’d fill a baby tub full of warm water, add some baby wash, and let them relax in the water for a moment as I gently rubbed their tiny little bodies with baby soap. At first, they weren’t too confident being in the water. As a matter of fact, Twin A feared the water until she felt the warmth wet her little head, and then her entire body sank in relaxation. Now they move around all giddy and happy, and once they are out, they are cool and calm. When bedtime comes rolling around, their second warm bath calms them for the final shut eye.

4. Baby lotion/balm

I tried to only use baby lotion at night to help my twins associate this with bedtime. But when it’s one of those INSANE days, and I’ve run out of ideas, I have my go to cream on hand! My preferred scent of choice during the day are those that include honey or lavender. I rub the lotion on their temples, hands and soles of their feet. When the scent fills their tiny little nose, the crying spell diminishes. For bedtime, I combine the baby lotion with a lavender and chamomile baby balm, leaving their bodies smooth, soft and ready for their adventures in dreamland.

5. Swaddle

The swaddles have been my saving grace since day one! Bringing home newborn twins and trying to adjust to their wants and needs earlier on was tough. How do you calm a crying and cranky baby, two for that matter, that you’ve just met? Even after I exhausted all measures, the swaddle would calm them down instantly. Even when the twins would get colicky throughout the day, the swaddle was a sure fire way to ease their pain. The nurse who took care of me in the hospital explained that, “Once you wrap them with a swaddle they relax and calm down, because they feel safe and secure just like in the arms of their mama.” It was a relief to know that the swaddle gave me an extra pair of hands! I believe my movie nanny, Mary Poppins, would give this the stamp of approval!
