Figuring out what to have your twins (and other kiddos) eat for a full-week can be stressful. That’s why we’ve rounded up some helpful tips from other twin parents on their go-to meals and how to meal prep for kids.

We recently had a twin parent ask:

Ok, I am eight months into this twin mom thing (and I have an almost 4-yo), and I definitely have a question to all the twin moms out there and or moms of multiples and extra siblings (so three or more kids)…How do you meal plan for a week?

I feel like this is the most stressful thing of what they’re gonna eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day.

Thankfully, our supportive twin parent community chimed in!

Meal prep tips other twin parents shared:

“Crockpot cooking proteins, instapot rice, but def ice cube trays for portioning. Such a time saver!”

“I make extra of almost everything and most lunches are leftovers. Have a couple pantry staple meals that are brainless and quick (enchiladas, pesto quinoa, etc.) so you have something to make on days you didn’t plan anything.”

“This is the window I found the hardest as a twin mom with a toddler. I asked my support people for meals/muffins I could keep in our freezer. It took me a while to realize I needed to be easy on myself. My twins ate a lot of canned oranges and pears. I let my toddler eat the baby cereals when/if he wanted.”

“Eight months can be so stressful because you’re still introducing new foods and you have to be careful about sizes and textures. I used Solid Starts as some inspiration for meals for the whole family at that stage, but it was too much to follow fully. It helped me think, ‘Okay, this week I’m introducing cantaloupe and tomatoes (for example).’ And then I made sure I worked those items in a few times, on top of things I already knew they liked or wanted to give more exposure. And that gave me a start for what everyone else was eating. Now (2 years into twins, plus older sibling), we sort of have a rotating set of meals we often eat (with variations) but I don’t strictly meal plan.”

“Batch cooking! Freeze in large ice cube trays and take out a few cubes each day to defrost for meals. Increase the portions of cubes as they grow and eat more and mix and match cubes for variety.”

“A week at a glance stressed me out, but I buy staple items and then every morning I plan that day’s meals on a notepad. That way when it’s lunch time, I don’t have to think, I look at the paper and make it lol.”

“Feed them what you and the other kids eat, just cut it up super small, and eat all together.”

“Solid starts 100-day plan!”

“Never give them another meal than the one you prepared and always have veggie soup in the fridge.”

“Try to feed the same as the fam. Or chicken nuggets, fish sticks, cheese, or hummus with crackers.”

“Batch cook items (chicken thighs, veggies, hummus) then mix and match each day and FREEZE things!”

“My twins are too little to eat solids yet, but for my toddler I used What Mummy Makes recipe book. The food is great so you can cook one dish for everyone including the grown-ups. I try to do a double-batch. One for this week and one for next–our busy nights are our freezer raids.”

“Assign one day of the week for prep and freeze in icecube trays or bags and just defrost.”

“Made a list of our usual fast meals organized by cuisine. Helps my tired brain!”

“They eat what I eat unless I have a pureed mix for them already.”

“I ordered takeout food lol.”

“I just have my twins, but I love making these veggie-loaded muffins from The Natural Nurturer. They take some time to put together, but I make a double batch so I can freeze some and there are plenty to use for snacks and breakfast. I also enjoy eating them myself too!”

“I try to have some sauces in the freezer (like yummy toddler food’s green ricotta pasta sauce) so I can just thaw, cook pasta, and have a nutritious meal quickly.”

“Chicken nuggets! 😂”

“Pizza in an air fryer.”

“Prep! I make a load of waffles (with a veg puree from baby food glass) and freeze them.”

“Every kind of meatball (red meat, turkey, quinoa) freeze them, add veggies!”

“Pasta with a glass of baby food as a sauce!”

“Overnight oats (heat if they prefer) are a fabulous way of producing porridge in seconds. You can then top with a range of toppings—cinnamon, berries, banana.”

Quick recap of how to meal prep for kids (with less stress)

Here are some of the common threads among what twin parents have shared makes meal time more manageable:

  • Have a running list of go-to quick meals
  • Establish a general rotation of meals (with variations for variety)
  • Double batch meals
  • Utilize a freezer
  • Use helpful tools like ice cube trays and Baby Brezza (for infants)
