If you are currently living in an area that does not have club or meet up group specifically for parents of multiples, why not start one? (f you aren’t sure if you have a local twins club, we have compiled an entire list of local twin clubs for you have to save you the trouble!)

I know you might be thinking, “Are you crazy? How I am supposed to start a twin club when I have littles that are driving me up a wall? Well you can! It’s not only for you, it’s for those littles that are driving you crazy as well.

Parenthood can be a lonely place if we don’t have the right kind of support and even though you are basically never alone because of the tiny nursery school you gave birth to, nothing beats commiserating with another parent of twins.

Scientific America Mind magazine published research showing the effects being a new parent can have on the brain. They found that new mothers who receive inadequate social support may struggle to feel happy and are more likely to experience depression from the overwhelming amount of work a new baby can bring (…ah, try two or more new babies.) They also feel pressure to show and feel this constant state of bliss and fulfillment with their new role. Their research found that women were going back to work because of the loneliness they felt. However, they found that mothers with a strong social support network who have confidence in their ability to parent were 75 percent less likely to be depressed than mothers who had no advantage.

Think about it. You are mostly likely getting your information from your favorite twin website (aka Twiniversity). You are getting hands-on support from your partner, friends, and family (I hope). But what about that emotional support or those affirmations that only a fellow parent of multiples can provide, because they just get it?

Here are some thoughts on how to get started:

What does a local twin club do?

While we know the services and education we provide here at Twiniversity is pretty top notch (if we do say so ourself) we know that nothing beats meeting up with real folks in real time in real life!

Your local club should connect local parents of twins so you can provide an official venue for some nice peer to peer support.

If you want to take it one step further, you can work with local doctors and even hospitals and maybe see if they would offer up their space as a place to meet. You provide the support to their folks, they provide the venue. Fair trade!

If you want to even level up from there, you can work with local business like restaurants, party planners, balloon stores, etc that would love to advertise with your group in exchange for some snacks and decorations for events perhaps. There is so much a local club can do and it can be so much fun.

Why start a local twins club?

If you are reading this article, you already know why. You, yourself, are looking for connection and support and you should rest assured that you are NO WHERE near alone. MILLIONS of moms and dads out there are hungry for human connection that goes beyond TikTok or Instagram. You won’t regret taking the time to start this, we promise. We here at Twiniversity ENCOURAGE it. After all, if you’ve ever attended a Twiniversity live workshop or class, one of the FIRST things we do is say “tell us where your from and find a buddy in your area”. We know how much it means to us when we meet up with our twin parenting besties, and we want the same for you.

How does someone start a twin club in their area?

Never be afraid to try. Nothing has to be formal either and there doesn’t have to be much structure. After all, you’re just trying to find some new besties in the ‘hood. Perhaps start with your current friends. How many twin families do you know? Consider a Facebook group or maybe just a WhatsApp group but use that as a place to make a plan to meet up in person. Create a set day and time to meetup and make it consistent. Even if someone wanted to join you, they will have an easier time doing it if you meet at the same time, at the same place on the same day each month. OH and don’t plan on meeting in person more than once a month at first. If you plan on once a week you might not get as may folks as you would if you only met once a month. AND you can always connect with other folks you meet there as much as you like, but as far as your ‘club’ goes, plan on monthly at first and go from there so you don’t get overwhelmed.

After I find some local multiples parents, and we’ve found time to meet (crazy right?), what do we do next if we want to become more “official”?

Nothing, you already are! Long gone are the days of collecting dues for memberships to groups. Thanks to the good ‘ol internet/apps, there shouldn’t be any overhead therefor you shouldn’t need any money to get started. Start slow and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Never forget that your family should always come first and you should figure out how many hours a week you can dedicate to your new twin club passion project. OH, and if you do choose to create a logo and maybe some t-shirts, ask the folks that are in your group what their special skills are and you might find you have a graphic artist or photographer in the group that will volunteer their time to help grow the club.

What are the downsides of starting a local twin club?

I’ll tell you honestly, it’s keeping up with it if you are doing it all alone. My #1 piece of advice I would give you is to start this with ONE other parent (who ideally you aren’t married to or in a relationship with). Together you can divide and conquer AND no one has to drop the ball when kids are sick or there is a school event or doctors visit that can’t be missed. Despite the fact that we are more connected now than ever thanks to social media, we all know its still lonely out there, so having a teammate to do this with will make this experience even better.

Once I started, how do I get the word out about our local twins club?

You can let us know for starters. We have the most complete list on the internet of existing local twin clubs. Then consider using a program like canvas to make a flyer to give out to local doctors offices and other places that pregnant folks might be like a fertility clinic or even an 3d ultrasound office.

What else do I need to do to get my local twins club started?

Not much but enjoy the fruits of your labor. You have a bit of work ahead of you, but it will all be worth it. If you need any specific support or have more questions, don’t hesitate to message us at Community@Twinivesity.com or slide into our DMs, we are just @Twiniversity on every social platform.
