Meant to Be a Twin Mom: Letting Go of Control and Finding Joy

Meant to Be a Twin Mom

From finding out she was pregnant with twins at 36 (with two daughters already) to learning how to balance the joys with the challenges, twin mom Lauren shares her honest story about embracing twin motherhood.

From PCOS and surprise twins to sleepless nights and laughter-filled mornings, here’s what I’ve learned as a mom of four.

When I found out I was pregnant with twins at almost 36, I laughed, cried, and panicked — all at once. I have PCOS, a seven-year-old and a five-year-old daughter, and a Type A personality that loves control… and suddenly, life had other plans.

Welcome to twin motherhood: chaotic, exhausting, and absolutely magical.

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 16, so I always assumed pregnancy might be difficult for me. But I was lucky — I conceived naturally with my first two daughters, and again naturally with my twins.

Even still, we weren’t actively planning to grow our family. We always said, “If a third happens, it’s meant to be.”

So when I learned it was twins, the emotions were overwhelming: excitement, fear, gratitude, and pure shock.

I’m a special education teacher and very much a Type A personality. I like plans. Schedules. Control.

So postpartum life with twins rocked me. Hard. I remember snapping at my husband for putting bottle parts together the “wrong” way — when really, that was the tiniest problem in our world.

It wasn’t about bottles. It was exhaustion, hormones, and learning to release control.

One of my biggest lessons has been giving up control…

Yes, keeping twins on the same schedule helps with survival — but they are still two completely different individuals. What works for one doesn’t always work for the other, and that’s okay.

Letting them be themselves, instead of forcing them into the same box, has been freeing for all of us.

I made the difficult decision to take the rest of the school year off. Financially, it’s been tight. My husband owns his own business, so we’re constantly balancing work, income, and family life.

It hasn’t been easy, but it felt right for our family.

My pregnancy went well, though we were told several times that the girls had growth restrictions. I worked right up until the end — leaving school on a Friday fully expecting to return Monday. Instead, I went into labor Saturday night at 36 weeks. A C-section became the safest option.

Because they were premature, the girls spent about six hours in the NICU for observation. Those hours felt long and emotional, but thankfully they did great and were soon back in our arms.

Postpartum with twins has been humbling. Double feeds. No sleep. Mountains of laundry. Learning to accept help instead of trying to do everything myself.

Some days I feel strong, other days completely stretched thin.

Watching my older girls become big sisters and seeing the twins start to bond reminds me why this season matters so much.

Now at four months old, they’re thriving — smiling, growing, showing their personalities, and starting to laugh and recognize each other. Moments like that make it all worth it.

What I learned from early twin mom life…

I was always meant to be a twin mom!

Twin parents, remember that…

You are doing an incredible job — even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Progress over perfection.

Schedules help, but individuality matters.

Ask for help.

Give yourself grace.

This season is hard, but it is also deeply meaningful.
