Putting together your baby registry for twins? Here’s what other twin parents wish they would have had on their twin registry looking back after the fact! Learn from their oversights!

When you’ve got two little newborn babies to take care of, having the right baby gear can truly be a game-changer.

I never had any babies before my twins, so once I was around 12 weeks pregnant, I did a Zoom call with my mom and older sister (who already had two kids) to have them help me put together the basics for my baby registry. Another twin mom I knew even wrote down a list of must-have items that she highly recommended!

This was helpful because I was very much getting sucked into caring way too much about the aesthetic of the nursery instead of making sure I had the most helpful, necessary gear. Thankfully, overall I feel like we had so many of the twin baby items we needed! Two cribs, a solid double stroller, multiple swings and rockers to sit the babies in, diapers galore, etc.

But..

Looking back, there are still a few things I really wish I would have thought about during my twin pregnancy because we either ended up buying them afterwards or struggled way more than we needed to.

4 Things I Wish I Put on My Twin Baby Registry

1. More twin-specific educational materials like twin lactation and twin sleep support

As a first-time mom when I had my twins, I felt like I was on overdrive trying to not only learn how to do all the mom things, but also trying to understand how it was all going to work for TWO babies.

The two biggest things we struggled with once we brought the twins home from the NICU was sleep and feeding. Not surprising, right? But having the right gear and baby products alone couldn’t help with this mountain of a hurdle.

If I could go back in time in the months leading up to my twin delivery, I would have without a doubt put twin lactation support and Twins Sleep School on my baby registry.

We didn’t truly get a goodnight’s sleep until well into 11 months of twin parenthood. Our twins shared a room, and one of them was constantly waking up at odd hours of the night and sometimes waking up the other. Having had spent the time learning more twin-specific gentle sleep methods would have been life-changing, no exaggeration.

When it came to breastfeeding and pumping, I only ended up nursing one of my twins, but I pumped until they were 16 months. And even though I had a lactation counselor in the NICU, she wasn’t a twin mom, and I felt like she never whole-heartedly understood the unique struggles I was having with pumping and latching.

I would have given anything at that time to have connected with someone who had walked that path before and could give me guidance from their firsthand experience. I didn’t realize at the time how many lactation supports Twiniversity offers, but I probably would have signed up for every single one of them and added them to my baby registry!

Here’s a quick list of their twin-specific sleep and lactation support (which can all be covered by insurance):

  • Twins Sleep Class – a live 75-minute class run by a twin mom named Lauren Oak who’s also a doula and gentle sleep coach
  • Twin Sleep School – a comprehensive course on all things twin sleep, created by Twiniversity founder and IBCLC Natalie Diaz and Kim West (aka the Sleep Lady)
  • Twin Lactation Support – virtual 1:1 twin lactation sessions with Natalie Diaz
  • On-Demand Twins Breastfeeding Class – a comprehensive course on all things twins breastfeeding that you can watch at your own pace
  • Pumping for Two – a live 75-minute twins pumping class run by Natalie Diaz
  • Breastfeeding Twins BOOB Camp – a live 75-minute class that gives an overview of twin breastfeeding must-knows

2. Baby bottle washer

Once we finally brought the twins home, washing baby bottles and pump parts was the bane of our existence. It was never-ending. The skin on my hands and fingers was constantly dry (like back in the early pandemic days). We must have spent a full hour a day at the sink washing baby bottle parts. And we used the Dr. Brown’s bottles that had all those extra little inserts too.

Even though I’ve seen the price tag on some of the baby bottle washers out there, if I could go back, I would 100% have put one on my twin baby registry. It would have given us back so much peace and time in those early days.

3. The Twin Z Pillow

Before the twins were delivered, we already had two single boppies that were hand-me-downs from my older sister, and those were super useful! But around the 3-month mark, we had a friend gift us the twin z pillow, and then another twin mama with twins a bit older gave us hers, and I absolutely loved these pillows!

We used them everyday for probably up to the 22 month mark for support with eating and lounging. They felt a bit bigger and more sturdy than the smaller single boppies that we already had. This definitely would have gone on my original baby registry for twins had I known had helpful these pillows were.

4. A meal support fund

Figuring out meals in those first few months was a huge challenge. Our twins spent 3 months in the NICU, and we were living at a friend’s house for that first month because she lived 15 minutes from the hospital where our babies were (our home was over an hour and a half away).

Nevertheless, we spent an exorbitant amount of money on food in those initial months between buying lunch and sometimes breakfast at the hospital and then getting Door Dash deliveries to the house for dinner. It truly was mayhem.

Having had some sort of meal fund put together in advance on our baby registry would have made a world of a difference. Now, not all twin parents have NICU stays, but even just those initial weeks home with two newborns will make getting meals together a huge challenge.
