How to Prepare for Twins: The #1 Thing That Helped Twin Parents Feel Ready

how to prepare for twins

Bringing twins into the world can bring a lot of uncertainty and fear! That’s why we’ve asked twin parents to share what actually helped them feel more prepared for twins before their delivery day.

Chances are you are trying to wrap your head around the reality of bringing two babies into this world at the same time. And you’re wondering what you can do to feel even slightly more ready to take on that exciting yet daunting task!

We recently asked our twin parent community…

What was the #1 thing you did before your twin’s delivery that actually made you feel more prepared?

And here’s what twin parents had to say:

Set up our spaces

“Set everything up, washed/sterilized everything, familiarized myself with their stuff.” – Lindsay

“I had my nursery done at 24 weeks in case I ended up on bed rest. Jokes on me—no bed rest but they did arrive at 29 weeks. It was one less thing to worry about during a NICU stay.” – Katherine

“Stock piling diapers, having multiple changing stations through the house (pack n plays with changing stations) and having a great husband that is a true parent and did the feeding and changes with me or we took turns so we could get sleep.” – Hannah

“Diaper raffle at the baby shower. Got enough to last beyond their first year. Never had to buy diapers or wipes!” – Amanda

Baby Brezza Formula Pro. My plan was to exclusively breastfeed, unfortunately I wasn’t able to. The Baby Brezza was a game changer!!!” – Ebony

Mentally and physically prepared

“Mentally prepped for a NICU stay. When it happened, I was calm and knew what to expect.” – Ohsnap125

“Saw a pelvic floor therapist” – Becky

“Research” – maumhartley

“Reading a lot of Twiniversity resources and pelvic floor therapy!” – Carrie

“Mentally prepared for the real possibility of a c-section and early delivery. And it happened. They are 3 now and driving me nuts, but I love them! – Tatanka

“I did some research on things I wasn’t planning on doing (co-sleeping, formula etc). So if things didn’t go to plan, I didn’t have to figure out this brand new thing with two newborns.” – Milly

“Make lists (it’s my thing), read/research and join twins and multiples FB groups but ultimately it was resigning to the fact that nothing might go according to plan!” – Meili

“Went to the multiple birth play group pregnant and asked the mums all the questions.” – Monique

“Had my baby shower at 23 weeks, which was clutch. I was hospitalized and had the girls shortly after.” – Christa

“Talked to another twin mom who had her twins about 8 months before ours came along. She was able to tell me what twin registry items were most helpful and mentally prepare me for what it was like having both babies in the NICU.” – Paige

There is no preparing for twins (haha)!

“Nothing could prepare me for what I was about to experience! My whole world changed.” – nirvana.e.n.d

“I only found out at 15 weeks that I was pregnant and that it was twins then 13 weeks later they arrived. Didn’t take time to plan ahead.” – Amanda

“Nothing. Nothing you do will prepare you. I was a first time mom with twins.” – Tiffany

“Nothing, they came too early, and I was NOT prepared at all even though doctors did tell me there’s a big chance that they would end up in NICU. I tried to prepare for that, but no preparing helped because every beep on the machines was a scare for me with a 2lb and 3lb girl and boy.” – Tara

“You can never be prepared for twins!!” – Susan

“Nothingggg could have prepared me for my postpartum experience, but I would have spent more time understanding the difficulties and complexities of breastfeeding…” – Staycie

Had my hospital bag, birth plan, or back-up plans ready

“Hospital bag!” – elcinyazan

“Kept to-go bag in car early and made plans for multiple birth scenarios and shared with hubby/the family.” – happyperson24688

“It’s a little morbid in a way but we went over everything that we would do in different situations, God forbid health got scary for me and/or the babies. I also had emergency plans in place and made sure everyone knew just in case. I was having a very normal easy pregnancy and then it all changed and we did an emergency C-section at 33 weeks and everyone was happy we had those plans in place and conversations had and decisions made.” – Alexis

“My obgyn went over each step of a vaginal delivery which was the plan and a c-section should that have to happen. I felt very prepared and during delivery she would say, ‘I’m going to do this, remember we talked about it.’  And I would say yes. It was very calming to know she had a plan and I knew the plan.” – Ashley

“Having a hospital bag ready. They came early all I had to tell my husband is to grab the bag and come back. It had extra chargers, clothes for him and me also snacks and toiletries.” – Gaby

“Have someone on call to care for the three year old sibling—good thing, because we were in the hospital for five days before the twins were born early.” – Stacy

Planned ahead for the first few weeks

Meal prepped and prepared everything.” – ercwithzee

“Packed my hospital bag at 26 weeks, ended up needing it only 7 weeks later.” – Erika

“Weird one, but I got some jobs done for myself knowing I wouldn’t have time for myself soon, I got my eyes tested + new glasses, new comfy clothes, cleaned & dried a few bedsheets so I didn’t have to do that for a while, got a haircut & batch cooked meals to freeze.” – Beth
