Shelby Magnani walked into an Ankeny, Iowa clinic with stomach pains… only to learn soon after that she was 34 weeks pregnant… with twins… mono mono twins! Shelby and her fiance James Croskey were shocked to hear the news. Of course they were! Could you imagine making it to 34 weeks with mono mono twins without knowing?! That’s the shock of a lifetime!!
Monoamniotic (aka “mono mono”) twins are very rare, occurring in only 1-2% of all twin pregnancies. Mono mono twins are identical twins that share the same amniotic sac and placenta. These pregnancies are considered high risk and very closely monitored. Imagine Shelby’s shock when she learned what mono mono twins were and how far along she got in her pregnancy without any monitoring!
Shelby was rushed in for an emergency c-section and the twins were born healthy. The parents named them Anna and Ava. The girls will spend the next several weeks in the NICU at Mercy but other than some monitoring they are expected to be okay.
We send our heartfelt congratulations to Shelby and James! We’re sending them a copy of Nat’s book, “What To Do When You’re Having Two” in the hopes that it will help them along in this crazy whirlwind of parenting multiples!
